Trad jazz Resources

Jazz workshops

The Australian Jazz Museum in Wantirna, Melbourne hosts
jazz workshops for under-25 and over-25 musicians wanting to learn to improvise after the trad jazz/New Orleans style. These workshops can be a great way to meet other musicians you may be able to jam with.

Trad jazz instructional videos

Jazz at Lincoln Centre videos on New Orleans style jazz.
Search video catalogue for "New Orleans". There are several videos with tips on how to play specific instruments in a New Orleans style band.

Traditional jazz curriculum in video format
There are two pages of these videos, instrument by instrument.

Tips on how to play particular instruments in trad jazz from members of the Original Wildcat Jass Band:
  • Drums "If I can't hear every other instrument, I'm playing too loud"
  • Trombone How to build a backing line around chord guides tones (thirds and sevenths)
  • Sax or clarinet How not to step in space filled by other players
  • Banjo Play straight fours (nothing fancy) - and don't choke the notes (let it ring)
  • Piano Some stylistic variations to consider experimenting with
  • Tuba Beginner's guide to creating a walking bass line
